Walking for PSP - Help to cure and bring awareness to PSP!
Support the Fight Against Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)
In 2020, my mum was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare and devastating neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, vision, and cognition. PSP is a progressive condition that gradually impairs the brain’s ability to control important functions. It damages nerve cells in the brain that are responsible for voluntary movements, thinking, speech, and vision. This leads to symptoms such as:
Severe balance problems that make walking and moving difficult.
Slowed movement and stiffness that can impact everyday tasks.
Difficulty controlling eye movements, often making it hard for individuals to look up or down or to blink.
Cognitive decline and changes in personality, leading to memory issues and challenges with thinking and decision-making.
Because PSP shares some symptoms with Parkinson's disease, it’s often referred to as an atypical parkinsonism disorder. However, unlike Parkinson's, PSP tends to progress more rapidly and can lead to severe disability more quickly.
Currently, there is no cure for PSP, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms to improve quality of life. In my mum’s case, the disease has progressed to the palliative stage, and she is now receiving hospice care. Despite these challenges, my mum has continued to fight with incredible courage and strength, and the support from my dad has allowed her to stay at home, which is something most families are unable to do.
To raise awareness of PSP and support ongoing research for a cure, I will be participating in the 19km walk from Bridgewater to Beaumont on May 18th, joining the Pioneers Women’s Walk. Every donation, no matter how small, will go toward research for a cure, improving treatments, and providing support for families affected by this condition.
With your help, we can make a real difference in the fight against PSP. Every contribution matters, and all donations are tax-deductible.
We are partnering with Fight Parkinson’s, an organization that works to improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease and atypical parkinsonism disorders, such as PSP, MSA, and CBS. By raising awareness and funding research, we can help future generations live free from PSP.
